BPA-Free enamels

Bisphenol A, usually abbreviated as BPA, is an organic compound with two phenol functional groups.

Since the 1960s, BPA has been used mainly in the manufactureing of plastics which are used in food and beverage containers, dental fillings, paints and glasses, among other objects of daily use. In this connection, it is a key monomer in the production of epoxy resin and in the most common form of polycarbonate plastic.

However, several investigations have revealed that excessive exposure to this material may have detrimental effects on health, although at the moment it appears to be short range and at high doses.

A report prepared in 2010 by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raised awareness of this compound in relation to exposure of fetuses, infants and young children.

In this regard, numerous alterations caused by bisphenol A in living beings have been associated, based on a deregulation of the endocrine system ("endocrine disruptor") and the production of hormones (mimicking the structure of natural estrogens). Adverse effects that must be emphasized are listed here below:

  • Changes in the behavior: Hyperactivity and aggressiveness.
  • Diabetes and obesity.
  • Early pubescent.
  • Reduction in sperm quantity.
  • Prostate cancer.
  • Breast cancer.
  • Chromosomal disorders.
  • Brain damage.
  • Impairment of immune function.
  • Decreased levels of enzymatic antioxidants.


Nevertheless, the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) decreed that BPA "does not pose any health risks to consumers in any age group". The European Union allows the use of BPA in materials that are in contact with food, always below limits established as safe, that prevent its filtration. These restrictions also apply to toys for children up to three years old. The migration limit currently set at 0.1 mg / l BPA and it will be reduced to 0.04 mg / l by 2018.
