Solvent distillers

Solvent recovery and reuse

We supply solvent distillers that allow the removal of impurities and residues present in solvents through the distillation process, separating the volatile components from the contaminants and recovering the solvents in purified form for further use. This helps maintain the quality of the surface finish and contributes to a more sustainable and economical operation.

Our range of distillers

We supply solvent distillers for the recovery and reuse of solvents used in surface washing and degreasing processes.

Our solvent distillers allow to separate the contaminant product (resins, pigments, paints, inks, oils, etc.) from the original solvent, which is collected in a container for later reuse.

The devices can be equipped with a vacuum generator, normally used for solvents with a high boiling point, or for flammable solvents with a boiling point close to the auto-ignition point.

Our offer of solvent distillers is divided into two series:

Static series

Distillers with flameproof electrical protection, with Atex execution, for treatment of flammable and non-flammable solvents, which are suitable for working in areas of maximum risk. This series offers load capacities from 15L to 160L, depending on the model.

They include a pair of windows with wipers to inspect the inside of the kettle during distillation and to facilitate successive loading without opening the lid.

The cycle is fully automatic, so the operator’s intervention is limited to solvent loading.

In the case of a manual cycle, the operator is responsible for the regulation of the temperature and cycle time of the distillation, as well as the discharge of the residues.

In the case of liquid contaminants, the process residues are discharged by simple rotation of the apparatus.

In the case of solid contaminants (paints, varnishes, polymers, resins, inks and pigments), the practical “Rec-Bag” eliminates any unloading and cleaning problems. The use of these bags allows to obtain a high concentration of solid contaminants, which offers a higher distillation yield. A process residue is obtained with an extremely reduced solvent percentage; this residue, contained in the bag, is easy and quick to discharge, avoiding any handling with the sludge and cleaning of the kettle.

Dynamic series

Series designed for the recycling of solvents with solid residues from the process. This series offers load capacities from 30L to 120L, depending on the model.

Series of distillers incorporating a self-cleaning kettle, equipped with an internal rotor with scraper blades, whose function is to move the product being treated to prevent it from sticking to the walls and bottom of the kettle, thus avoiding the use of bags.

This rotor with scraper blades inside the kettle, besides allowing an optimal dragging of the treated solvent, simplifies the discharge of the contaminants avoiding that they stick to the walls, until obtaining a granular residue, in powder form.

The cycle is fully automatic. The operator’s intervention is limited to solvent loading. In case of manual operation, the operator has to regulate the temperature, the duration of the distillation cycle and discharge the residues.

Solvent recovery in surface finishing

Solvent distillers are widely used in numerous surface finishing activities. In many surface finishing processes, such as painting, varnishing, printing or coating, solvents are used to apply the chemicals and obtain a uniform, quality finish.

The solvents used in these processes are often contaminated with impurities, particles or residues of the applied product. This makes the solvents unsuitable for direct reuse without adequate purification.

Solvent distillers are efficient tools for recovering and purifying contaminated solvents used in surface finishing activities. By recycling and reusing solvents, companies can reduce the costs of purchasing new solvents and also reduce the environmental impact by avoiding the disposal of contaminated solvents.

Operation of our solvent distillers

The basic operation of a solvent distiller involves heating the contaminated solvent mixture in a closed vessel. As the liquid is heated, the components with lower boiling points vaporize first and are collected in a condenser, where they are cooled and converted back to pure liquid. The vapors of the higher boiling point components remain in the vessel, separated from the recovered components. In this way, a purified solvent is obtained that can be used again.

In our equipment, the boiling of the contaminated solvent takes place in a kettle with a diathermic oil loophole reheated with one or more electrical resistors. The vapors produced are then sent to an air- or water-cooled condenser. After this process the condensed solvent is collected directly into a container suitable for reuse.

The characteristics of the treated solvent are not altered by this process, which can thus be repeated indefinitely.

Efficiency of solvent distillers

Thanks to their excellent design, performance and ease of use, the solvent distillers supplied by Coniex achieve high percentages of efficiency in solvent recovery and purification.

Our solvent distillers achieve efficiencies above 95%. This means that more than 95% of the original solvent is recovered in purified form and can be reused. However, it is important to note that some types of contaminants or impurities may be difficult to remove completely by distillation, which can affect the overall efficiency of the process.

In addition to the performance of the distiller itself, efficiency also depends on other factors, such as proper maintenance of the equipment, monitoring and control of operating variables, and the initial quality of the solvents and impurities present. It is also important to consider that each specific application and process may have particular requirements and challenges, which can influence the performance and efficiency of solvent distillers.

Benefits of solvent distillers

Solvent distillers offer a number of benefits to the metal surface finishing industry, including:

    • Distillers make it possible to recover and purify the solvents used in the metal surface finishing process, allowing them to be reused. This significantly reduces the cost of acquiring new solvents and minimizes the generation of chemical waste.
    • By using purified solvents, the quality of the finish of metal surfaces is improved. Distillers remove impurities and contaminants that could adversely affect the appearance and durability of the applied coating or coating.
    • Solvent distillers contribute to compliance with environmental regulations and standards related to solvent handling and chemical waste management. By recovering and recycling solvents, the release of toxic substances into the environment is reduced and the negative impact on health and the environment is minimized.
    • By recovering solvents by distillation, energy is saved compared to the production of new solvents. The energy required to heat and distill contaminated solvents is less compared to the energy required to manufacture and process solvents from scratch.
    • The reuse of solvents through distillers optimizes operating and production costs. The reduction in the purchase of new solvents, as well as the reduction in expenses associated with waste management and disposal, can have a significant impact on the overall costs of the metal surface finishing process.
